What's up with the doctors in Toledo, Ohio?
Over the past several months I've been following national news and I've noticed an interesting series of...naughty doctors that all seem to be located in or around the Toledo, Ohio, and employed by ProMedica and/or the University of Toledo Medical Center, two of the large healthcare systems in the region.

First up we have Andrew Campbell, MD, a former hematology/oncology fellow at the University of Toledo. On December 7, 2024, he attempted to burn down another physician's home. Reportedly, this was the home of Tahir Jamil, MD, who reportedly told police that he and Campbell's wife had an affair from late July to early August 2024, and that in August 2024 "she [Campbell's wife] allegedly told Jamil her husband had discovered their relationship." Dr. Campbell ultimately took a plea deal and was sentenced to serve at least four years in prison.

In June 2025, a University of Toledo resident physician training at ProMedica Toledo Hospital by the name of Advait Deshmukh, MD was busted after a hidden camera was found in a staff bathroom at the hospital. Reportedly, Dr. Deshmukh was a third-year urology resident at the time, which certainly seems topical given the crime. Of note, Dr. Deshmukh also obtained his medical degree from the University of Toledo College of Medicine, graduating in 2022. On January 13, 2026. Dr. Deshmukh was formally indicted by the Lucas County Court of Common Pleas on 15 counts of voyeurism and one count of tampering with evidence.

Next, we have the case of William Murdoch, MD. Strictly speaking, this case happened in Monroe, MI (and Port St. Lucie, Florida...and the Internet). Dr Murdoch was affiliated with ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital; ProMedica is one of the three major health systems in the Toledo, OH area. Per one online biography,
Dr. Murdoch’s passion is teaching inpatient medicine to residents. He was one of the first family physicians nationwide to receive the Recognition of Focused Practice in Hospital Medicine from the ABFM/ABIM. He currently serves as a teaching hospitalist, associate director of the ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital Family Medicine Residency, and Program Director of the Transitional Year Residency.
However, in September 2025, Dr. Murdoch was arrested by US Marshals on a warrant out of Port St. Lucie, Florida.

According to Port St. Lucie, Florida detectives, Dr. Murdoch was chatting online with who he believed to be a mother of a 5-year old girl through the mobile messaging app Kik "to see if she would allow her 5-year-old to be courted by and have a sexual relationship with him." Unfortunately for him, this "mother" turned out to be an undercover detective.
Per a statement released by ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital, Dr. Murdoch's hospital privileges were immediately suspended and all activity involving the physician was terminated. Dr. Murdoch has been charged with a second-degree felony under Florida Statute 847.0135 (3)(b), and his court case is pending in the Circuit Court of St. Lucie County.

Our next criminal contestant is Hassan-James Abbas, MD, a surgery resident also at the University of Toledo. The story involving Dr. Abbas is especially sordid and sensational. Per allegations in court filings (he faces both criminal charges and a civil suit), Dr. Abbas met a woman on the dating app Hinge and began a romantic relationship with her. In December 2024, after the woman told Dr. Abbas she was pregnant, Dr. Abbas allegedly ordered the abortion drugs mifepristone and misoprostol online and forced the woman to take them while physically restraining her. As reported in the civil complaint, the woman had "white powder residue" on her face and was ultimately able to get away and go to the emergency department at a local hospital, where she "bled uncontrollably" and miscarried her baby. Shortly after the allegations first came to light in November 2025, the State Medical Board of Ohio summarily suspended Dr. Hassan-James Abbas' medical license. And on December 3, 2025, a Lucas County grand jury indicted him on six felony charges, including abduction, tampering with evidence, unlawful distribution of an abortion-inducing drug, disrupting public services, identity fraud and deception to obtain a dangerous drug.

To add further context to this case, it's important to know that Dr. Hassan-James Abbas is the son of Jihad Abbas, MD, a well-known vascular surgeon in the Toledo area who was apparently the owner of the home where this all went down, and is also named as a defendant in the civil complaint filed by the female victim. The above excerpt from the civil complaint lends some insight into what kind of person Hassan-James Abbas is, and the nature of the relationship with his father. And if the civil suit's claim that the junior Abbas had gotten into the same vascular surgery fellowship where his father was the program director, it brings up some serious questions about nepotism in medicine.

It was recently reported that the female victim's motion to stay anonymous in the civil lawsuit was denied by a Lucas County judge. The civil suit has since been refiled/amended unredacted, but out of respect for her privacy we will not be posting the full civil complaint here.

The most recent case to make national headlines is that of Hanuman Gowda, MD, who is a resident physician at ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital. Dr. Gowda was recently charged and indicted in Perrysburg, OH Municipal Court on six counts of endangering children, five counts of felonious assault and one count of domestic violence for the alleged abuse of his 3-month-old son. Per court records, Perrysburg Police Division detectives were called to ProMedica Toledo Hospital regarding possible non-accidental trauma to a 10-week-old male infant. Staff in the emergency department advised that the infant was found with multiple fractures throughout his body in various states of healing, including the left and right femur, both arms, and multiple rib fractures, along with a wound on the upper lip. Allegedly, both Dr. Gowda and his wife, Colleen Sanclemente, initially said that they were unsure how any of the injuries occurred, but the interviewing detective's statement sheds further light on how the injuries may have happened.

According to ProMedica, Dr. Gowda has been placed on administrative leave. His next court appearance is on February 17, 2026.
